By the age of ten, this New Zealand artist was already writing songs. In 2007, she was signed by an independent label 'Forum 5' and was relocated to Australia to work on her debut album. After several singles, she has finally released a studio album, by the name of "Vows", with many songs including "Cameo Lover", "Good Intent" and "Settle Down" reaching the Australian Top 100 chart. With her incredible range, unique chord progressions and thematic lyrics, she has been compared to influential artists such as Nina Simone and Björk. As independent listeners, we definitely believe Kimbra has defined her own sound.
Here, Kimbra does a rendition of the song "Plain Gold Ring" made famous by the great Nina Simone. What is so impressive about her artistry is that she is not just acting, she is actually feeling the power of music. Also, she is making her own back up vocals by recording them through a separate microphone and looping them repeatedly.
Kimbra also has an incredible way with words in this thematic and jaw-droppingly gorgeous music video of her song "Good Intent." In general, she has a very theatrical style, here are more links to videos and her website:
